Live in Youngsville (near Lafayette) and was wondering about top-dressing tips. Was thinking of having it done for front and back as when I'm riding my mower I feel like I'm on a typical LA road. Some areas setting 3 will cut fine and others it will completely scalp the grass.

Will this also help with growth? Grass is mix of centipede and bermuda.

At this point I’m not sure I wouldn’t wait until next year and scalp and then top dress. Maybe a plug aeration to go with it. I need to do the same.

I just used sand which was cheap. Took a few rains and more sand to get it solid but it worked eventually. I did it in Summer as I have Bermuda and it was an unstoppable force when I did it.

It’ll definitely help with even mowing which is good for lawn health. My big reason was drainage. Had so many soggy spots.

ETA:

I think people on here shite on sand leveling. But it was cheap to have delivered and worked for me.

Sand. Masonry sand is preferred. You'll see many reports of river sand being used and the risk of putting torpedo grass every where.

You can do it now, it's just so damn hot. Wouldn't do it when it gets too close to fall though.

Takes a lot of sand to level. 1 ton sand per 1000sqft is what most people do. It's doesn't go as far as you think. And can take several years of applications to get it fully leveled depending on your goal is.

You can do mixes of sand/compost etc. to help provide some nutrients as well. Just know that compost degrades obviously.

Be sure to use a washed sand. The stuff they sold around Montgomery Alabama as “lawn sand” has a lot of fines and silt and is full of weeds. It’s best to do it when the grass is growing fast. Now is the time. Don’t wait too long.
