Most of those guys have a price to show up like $200 min or whatever. Some guys will do it reasonably but there’s also others that do quote really high, depending on location it may not be easy to find someone cheap. But you are right you should at least ask for a quote first before diy.

This is how I get rid of stumps on large family property.

1. Dig a 6" deep mote around the stump to expose the underground portion a bit.
2. Put steel drum over stump (the used ones are free or very cheap)
3. Put scrap wood (often the tree I just cut down in pieces) on top
4. Pour some kerosene or other fuel on top
5. Light
6. Go open a beer

Rinse and repeat

If you have a tractor and want to take care of your own stumps and also make some side hustle money, get the Woodland Mills PTO stump grinder. I have one and it's badass. Cuts well below ground level.

I don't have the time or desire for side hustles, but someone could easily do it. I have to keep mine hidden because when people see it, they want me to use it at their house or borrow it.
