Out of the blue I have 4 little gems that are jet black on their bark. Is there a treatment for it that is effective. And what causes. I have a rotor sprinkler that sprays on thrm, could that be the problem?
These four were looking rough when I moved here and have gotten slightly better. The four new plantings by them are healthy with no soot yet.

Your problem is aphids. You, or a neighbor, likely has infected crape myrtles that look the same. Irrigation has nothing to do with it.

I will look and see, I have not noticed any on my crapes, but neighbor does have some near by I will go see.

Horticultural Oil will take care of the insects and help the rain/sprinklers to loosen and wash away the mold itself.
