Soil Testing & Fertilizing

I think I am about ready to fertilize my St. Aug lawn and I was wondering if anyone had experience with the LSU Ag test kits that are sold at Clegg's or if I should not waste time with that and just send a sample in to the lab?
I was going to plan on fertilizing with the fertilome 24-0-4 plus iron, assuming the results come back recommending that I need to add something high in nitrogen. Does anyone have experience with this fertilizer or others that might be worth considering? I have greened up well, but some areas still seem to be lagging behind in growth rate.
Any help from the board is much appreciated!

Is this an "at home" test kit? If so I didn't know LSU Ag sold such a thing. I would just send a sample off to the lab. I would never not recommend doing that. Takes all the guess work out.

Are you sure it's not a Post office box that just has the plastic bags and instructions for collecting and mailing off in it?
That is what I get at my local nursery.

That’s gotta be what he’s talking about.

This.
Just be aware you will not get soil composition (clay, silt, sand). I thought that was part of it. The report will have your soil's ph, nutrient content and amount of organic matter.
Personally, I wanted my clay content because I think I'm heavy in clay which causes problems....but that was not one of the metrics.
It gives you an idea of what your soil needs to be in the best conditions for good plant growth.

Unless something is new, Cleggs or anyone else doesn’t sell LSU AgCenter soil test kits. They have the postage pre-paid soil test boxes - they give you the boxes - that contain instructions with 3 bags you can use to mail soil samples, with payment instructions, to have your soil analyzed. No more than 3 samples per box.
The AgCenter doesn’t analyze soil for nitrogen but they will provide you a recommended nitrogen rate for your lawn grass when you get your soil test results back
For St Aug, that will be 3 lbs of N per 1000 sq year, divided among 3 applications of 1 lb of N per 1000 sq ft, in April, June and August, the August application being optional. That would be 4 lbs of the Fertilome 24-0-4 per 1000 sq ft per application.
If your soil test results show a deficiency in P or K they will provide recommendation on how much of P and K to use to correct the deficiency. If soil pH requires adjustment the results will provide a recommendation on how much Ag lime to apply to raise the pH or how much elemental sulfur to apply to lower the pH.

I must’ve mistaken the LSU Ag website. Thought I read “at home test kit”
