Sorry if posted already, I looked but didn’t see a thread yet. I will be at work during the winter weather this week and am pondering going ahead and putting my portable generator in place but not hooked up. Don’t want wife to have to lug it around in the muck if power goes out. I have a Westinghouse 13kw that I run on natural gas. I have a pad built to put it on to keep it off the ground. I’d go ahead and put it on the pad and cover it so all they’d have to do is hookup the gas and fire it up. Any thoughts on of that’s a bad idea, maybe change to a lower viscosity oil??

Sounds like a perfect idea to me. I would use whatever viscosity oil it is supposed to run with.

ETA: do you have a transfer switch or will hou have to drag extension cords all over the house 9like me)?

Thanks Spankum - I know the standby generators have a housing but wasn’t sure if it was significantly insulated that it could withstand colder temps than a portable.

Luckily I have a transfer switch - the owners before me installed it!

It should be able to handle it. If you are in doubt, you can get an engine crankcase heater that drops right down the dipstick hole and plugs into 110V. You can typically get them in expensively at tractor supply

Mine hooks to an outside gas line. I hope the draw on the gas for everyone's heating doesn't lower the pressure below what the generator needs. I will assume not since most gas heaters don't run when there is no electricity.

Your oil is fine. 10w is good to -13F. If you are using 15w then it's good down to 5F. And even then the "w" factor its only going to really be for startup because that generator will warm fast and the oil won't have to go far to lubricate.
