Older roof deck boards cracking - How to repair?

My house was built in ‘77 and has board decking instead of plywood. I’ve had several leaks over the years where nails are backing out because some deck board have cracked, split or knots knocked out when the roof was changed about 15 years ago. I’ll need to replace the roof in 2-3 years, but when they nail the underlayment and new shingles, it’ll just cause more cracking and more future leaks. Roof was hand nailed last time. What are my options here? Really don’t want to totally re-deck it. Sheet over the decking with like 3/8 plywood? Concerned about the extra weight. Is there some type of thicker underlayment that would hold nails in place if the deck board splits and isn’t going to hold it?

A good roofer can easily cut out the problem areas of center match and install new plywood decking as needed.
This is a very common task.

Before you reroof the house, take the roofer into the attic and share your concerns. He'll take care of it.

I just replaced mine last year and had tongue and groove boards for decking. The roofers replaced any boards they thought needed it.

I get that, and of course they can replace the obviously cracked boards, but more boards will crack as the new shingles are nailed, just starting the cycle all over again. I know redecking it is the an$$$wer, I’m just asking if there’s an alternative. I would even consider going with a metal roof at a higher cost, but I have yet to see one still look good after a few years. Between fading and mildew, they don’t keep their finish.

That sounds very unusual.
My experience is that boards do not crack when nailed unless they are rotten.

Not rotten. Just dry and brittle from 44 years of attic heat I suppose. They’re not all like that, but enough to have to chase a leak or two per year from nails backing out.
