Have a live oak on my property that’s right next to the sidewalk and the limbs hang over a road in JP. Not a main road, one lane in either direction, but it is well traveled.

It’s not often that semis or box trucks drive down this street but every time they do the limb scrapes the top of the box. Have no idea if there’s any liability if a truck gets taken out by the limb, but I want to stop it from happening and also protect the tree.

I have no problem with calling my tree guys to come out and take care of it, but they will probably have to close at least one lane of the road to do the job, maybe both because it spans over the entire street. Is this something I should be calling the parish to take care of?

When I look at the website it says they maintain the clearance over roads, but don’t know if that’s the case when the tree is on my property. Gonna call the parish Monday morning but wanted to see if anyone had experience with this here first. TIA

If your tree guy is licensed, he should know about permits. The parish is responsible for the safety of the roadway. My experience is that they only take action after a limb has fallen. They would much rather you pay for work they should do.

I would certainly try to get the parish to pay for it. Know any poliiticians?

I had a large water oak in the front yard that had to be kept trimmed out of power lines. One branch broke and smacked my house. I called the city/parish and they came out and took down the whole tree.

Call the parish if you want it completed in 2-3 years. My experience has been that they are very slow to respond.

If they respond.

Problem is that nothing gets done until someone dies. At least you’re taking initiative.
Don’t expect any reimbursement. Probably not even a thank you.
But everyone will be safer because of you.
