Jeez, bad karma from this site
I ordered a couple Toshiba portable ACs from Woot for $129 apiece, thinking to prep for hurricane season (run them off generator). I commented in the Portable AC thread about them, apparently jinxing myself.
Last week my old central AC (R22) finally crapped out. The portables arrived the day I started troubleshooting it. Froze up. I had a guy, but he couldn't make it due to family issues. Finally had someone else make it out today, telling me the compressor is bad and can't be replaced, and they suspect the internal coils are leaking too. Telling me I need a new system, gave me a couple quotes (both 13K) for Ameristar or American Standard 4 ton units. I'm going to get a couple more quotes, as some folks tell me that's insanely high, but others are telling me that's the going rate. BR area. I guess with 100 degree weather, they kinda have us at their mercy.
At least I have a couple friends who are gonna lend me extra ACs. Right now, I have 2 bedrooms that are bearable, and the rest of the place is an oven.

I had several quotes. 5 ton 15 seer2 single stage would have been in the neighborhood of $14k for full system replacement. I'm in Mandeville. Ended up going with the proposal I outlined previously in the thread. It's actually being installed as we speak
