My mom’s house in Metairie, desperately needs a new roof, as hers is over 23 years old. It’s about 35 squares, 7” on 12” pitch hip roof. Any recommendations on a good roofer and what brand shingles should I consider? Also, is a fortified roof worth the extra cost, which I understand is over an extra $100 per square?

Shop around, how long does she plan to keep the house? I wouldn’t spend a bunch, if she plans to sell any time soon. A new roof, is a new roof.

You can go with a Class 3 or 4 shingle without going fortified, and it’s not a whole lot more. Lots of insurance companies give good discounts for them too.

Have you had a roofer look at thr roof to see if there is any hai or wind damage up there? Even if so the insurance co would probably discount so much for thr age of the roof it wouldn’t be of any help.

Atlas, Owens, certainteed or GAF are all good. We are using a lot of Atlas impact rated class 4 shingles lately. All of these brands are good, make sure to get a “system” for the longest warranty and wind rating. You will probably pay $16-$19,000 for it. Personally with the system roof I wouldn’t spend the money for fortified, I dont think the discounts are there. You could ice/ water shield the entire deck and then do regular roof which would be worth it
