I am looking to extend my patio by about 20 sqyd. In doing so, we will be digging up the current sod. Before I dig, could it be easily relocated to the side of my house where I removed about 20 bushes that were used as a "fence"?

If I can move, how deep should I dig below the sod?

To prep the area I am moving the sod to, do I need to expose all of the mud or can I lay over existing grass? I want to raise this area as it currently has a low point that puddles causing additional issues with growing in the area.

Rent a sod cutter. Shoot to undercut the roots of the gras by 2-3". The sod cutter will cut strips about 18" wide.
Cut what you need then either cut the strips into squares, or rolls.

Make sure to transplant asap. Probably best if you do all this in the spring when the grass isn't dormant.

Agree with Baseball. I would make sure you have at least 1" of dirt beneath the sod. Whoever you rent the sod cutter from can tell you more. If you forming up the patio yourself, you can use the sod cutter to get dirt to correct grade.

Thanks for the responses. Wife is trying to get it done next month, but I may try to get her to push it until March so we can repurpose the sod
