LSU Fig Breeding Program - The many varieties are hard to find

LSU had a great fig breeding program that started in the 50's and 60's. They have many varieties, but I have only seen a few varieties sold at local nurseries, which is usually LSU purple, gold, and O'Rourke. Where can we get the many other varieties that came from this program, such as LSU Tiger, Scott's black, Champaign, and the many others?

I bet if you ask nicely the good folks at the Hammond Ag center would let you take some cuttings. Those trees in the video are all on site there

Some nurseries will carry the officially released varieties. Unofficial releases can be found on figbid. Some are way harder to find than others. The ones you mentioned should be pretty available as cuttings on figbid. Where are you located? I have several that I’ll have cuttings from in a couple weeks - just waiting for the trees to go dormant.

I don't have any luck with cuttings. I tried doing that this year and they all died. I even did some air layering this year and they were unsuccessful. It isn't worth the aggravation and time.

Look up "The Fig Doctor" on Facebook. Local Louisiana guy with a ton of knowledge and varieties.

PSA for anyone else that wants these fig varieties my neighbor works at the Hammond Ag center and he let me know those specimen trees are open to the public to come get cuttings…that’s what they are for.
after the first cold spell they’ll be ready to cut. Just sign in at the office and you can go cut what you want
