Our kitchen table (~10 years old) needs to be refinished and I have some questions:

- Any recs in the BR area?
- What kinda $ am I looking at?
- Is it possible to just refinish the top of the table? Everything else is good. Just the top has been beat up over the years.

Got a photo of it?

What’s the material?

I'm not in the BR area so can't give recs. Refinishing just the top probably isn't the best idea because it'll never match the base. The base may look good, but it has weathered and likely undergone some color change depending on the type of wood, exposure to sunlight, etc.

If you're talking about a quality piece of furniture and you're already going to lay out the money to get a professional to refinish it, do the whole thing.

If you're dead set on just doing the top, that would be a relatively simple DIY job and wouldn't require much in the way of tools.

This looks like it but it's bigger. We got it from Ashley so it's not terribly expensive.

The big problem with furniture these days is the legs may be solid wood and maybe the frame too but that top might be the stupid compressed shite plaguing places like Ashley and Rooms to Go. When you sand shite like that and restain it it ends up looking like an ok paint job.

Ok, a picture of your table would be helpful.

I “restored” a garage sale find chest that we keep kids toys in. It had been outside on a porch and was seriously water stained with the finish falling off. It’s solid wood but looked like crap

I did a tung oil / turpentine rub on it. Use 000 steel wool dipped in the mix and rub it down to pull dirt, gime and remaining finish off. Any open wood gets coated in tung oil as you go. Use clean cloth to wipe off the grime/ sanding stuff that comes up as you go. Let dry and then repeat the next day.

You will also need to put the oil/turpentine mixture in a jar in a bowl of hot water to warm the oils up to mix them properly.

It takes a while to build up the sheen.

Another option is to just clean it and put some furniture wax/polish on it.

If it's just the top, then just strip it and go with a darker stain.
