You think this is the same thing or would Baton Rouge be an even further specific type?

Pretty sure the BR is closely related but more specific. It is a coral bark variety. I’d guess it was a lucky specimen that managed to tolerate the heat and has been propagated from cuttings.
Mr Maple has the most info I’ve found

Not the same cultivar but closely related - I do have a Coral Bark Sango-Kaku, very pretty Japanese Maple and a fast grower, pretty common and easy to obtain. There are a fair number of cultivars of coral bark Japanese maples.

That’s correct - often these newer cultivars of Japanese maples are obtained as “sports” (genetic mutation) of a branch of a more common cultivar, and the branch/cutting is removed and propogated/grafted and whoever does this gets to name the new cultivar.
The Baton Rouge coral bark cultivar I obtained from Mr. Maples a couple years ago was 3 ft tall, and now about 6 ft tall - that’s fast growth for a Japanese maple.

Bloodgood and Emporer 1 if upright, edge goes to bloodgood for South LA
I have an Emperor 1 and live south of I-10 in Daphne, AL across the bay east of Mobile. The one I have is in the sun probably 90% of the day and handles the heat and sun well. What I noticed about the Emperor 1 is the leaves don’t bust out until about 3 weeks after the Bloodgood and the leaves stay red all growing season. I believe the Emperor was developed to adapt to growing farther north because the Bloodgood blooms earlier and the late freezes make it hard to grow properly probably north of say Little Rock.
From my understanding the Bloodgoods prefer a little shade but my two neighbors have Bloodgoods in full sun and they are doing well. They do seem to blister more in the sun but maybe it’s the wind. Man alive it always seems windy here. One of my neighbors behind me planted a 1’ tall Bloodgood in the corner of his backyard. Bought it at a carnival for around $3.00. I kid you not that 1’ Bloodgood is at least 12’ tall and bushy and did this all in 4 years. Sometimes I guess plants or trees just like a certain spot and take off because that $3.00 Bloodgood is rapidly outgrowing the Bloodgoods my other neighbors have that were far older trees when planted.

I'll echo this. Blistering sun + wind will kill almost any maple in zones 8 and up. Just sun alone likely won't.
Stick to either red and green leaf varieties for better sun tolerance.
The lighter variegated and lace leaf types need more dappled shade.

I adore these maples, they are so cozy.
I like them too. My neighbors and I have the general philosophy that we don’t want tall trees growing anywhere near where they can fall on our homes during a hurricane thus those Japanese Maples make a nice tidy and colorful specimen to grow.
