This is correct. To take full advantage of "variable capacity" (not 2-stage) equipment needs to use fully communicating controls/t-stats. You cant use 3rd party stats.
The only exception is Bosch split system inverter based variable capacity heat pumps.

went with Trane XV18 in 2015. Quiet, humidity control, lowered utility bill. Would do it again
