I'm sure your plastic one will be fine for a while. I have a fairly old GE with a plastic valve and it works fine. I think it's 15-20 years old.
Yup my old GE was 20 years old and had a plastic valve. Worked fine in terms of no leaking but it did get clogged a bit in terms of letting water out so I just popped the whole thing off and let it drain outside once it was light enough for me to shimmy it through my basement.
I was shocked how long it took to fully drain

AO Smith is a big US company that makes and markets water heaters under about 10 brand names. It started in Ashland City, Tn down the Cumberland R from Nashville. AO Smith and State may be best known brands. They market units for homes, apartment complexes, etc. They do make water heaters for big box stores that are not the same quality you can get from a plumber or dealer. They have a system of dealer rebates based on sales. So you should try and negotiate with a dealer. Buying simple technology is never a bad idea. Hot showers when the power has been out 5 days is one advantage of a simple water heater.
