In 2009 all appliance companies got together and decided to only build junk. They didn't invite Alliance(Speed Queen) to the talks until 2020.
Sadly everyone now has decided that efficiency trumps all else. Bring efficient means lighter. Lower power motor. Use of DC more often. Washer tubs suspended by springs rather than balanced by them. 4 computers per device each costing 40-60% of the appliances cost to replace.

Before 2009 machines were analog. Simple. Used more power. Were less efficient. But Were based on switches. On and off. Switches, relays, timers. Nothing else. There is no need for most of the systems in an appliance. I just saw a fridge whose ice maker and half the fridge got out because water got into a small sub panel located on a pull out drawer. I mean why??

If you have anything made before 2009 appliance wise. Hold on to it. Especially fridges.

Damn efficiency.

You definitely need to find another HVAC service company - SOSFAN provided you a perfect answer. There are many good HVAC service providers out there who won’t try to rip you off, you just need to find one.

Safe to assume they didn’t show you a crack, visually or by photo, in the heat exchanger, certainly didn’t conduct a combustion analysis of the flue gases to verify you have a safety issue.

As SOSFAN stated, there is a reason furnace heat exchangers are warranted for 20 years. I also suspect if you had a low air flow problem causing the heat exchanger to overheat, leading to pre-mature failure, that the high temperature limit sensor in the furnace (safety device to prevent this very problem) would shut the furnace down until it cooled off.

Mt recommendation is. When you get an AC guy and he says "they don't make that freon anymore you need a new system" kick him the F out of your house. If your running R22 your so far ahead.

I have a 3 ton R22 unit at the farm. It was installed in the late 80's. Only issue I have had were fireants building a nest around the contactor and a couple of capacitors.

As for twice a year checkups, waste of money.

The reason for the twice per year checks is not just for inspection. Companies also clean the evaporator coil and condenser coil, something most homeowners don't do. It adds life to the unit.

Change your filters on time and keep the condenser coil clean and the need for the twice yearly maintenance isn't needed for most.
