I posted here before when I signed up for Sunday lawn care and it murdered all my grass. I got them to give me $500 for my trouble, but my grass is still dead.

I have a clean slate to start from scratch, but I want to do it right and make sure I have a nice green sustainable lawn. I am an amateur at lawn stuff.

I live in New Orleans and have about a 2000 sqft lawn.

What would be my best route? I had St Aug grass before. Should I stick with that and re-sod the whole thing? Should I seed with a different kind of grass? What is the best way to pull up all the dead shite?

TIA for any help

Depends on how much sun you get and how much time you want to put into it.

If shady and don't want to deal with a lot of upkeep, St. Aug is the way to go. A little over 4 pallets would have you completely covered.

If you have full sun and the time to keep up/mow more, I'd look into seeding with a hybrid Bermuda.

St Aug is best for shade and feels nicest underfoot.
I've got centipede, which goes dormant and brown in winter. BUT, it's easily 4 months of almost no lawncare, and it doesn't grow nearly as fast as St. Aug.

No trees or anything, my house shades the lawn for half of the day. Almost no traffic in the front, my dog runs around in the back but that's all.

Are you in south Louisiana? Everyone's lawn subsides here. You spread dirt in the low spots to level it out.

As others have suggested, you should go back to St Augustine, it is the most shade tolerant of the southern lawn grasses, and will perform well on the basic (pH) soils you have in the Orleans area.

New sod replacement really needs to be installed on bare soil so your issue will be removing the old dead lawn - I would not think trying to till the old dead sod under would be very efficient or effective. That means renting a sod cutting machine - which is not particularly expensive - but hauling off 2000 sq ft of dead sod would likely be your biggest issue if you intend this to be a DYI job. I suppose you could pile it high in a backyard area to compost and reuse it in landscape beds, fill in low spots, etc over time.

As another stated you’ll need about 4 pallets of sod, as a pallet covers 450 sq ft. In BR, a pallet of St Aug cost about $225 last time I bought some a couple years ago. Laying 4 pallets of sod as a DYI is an easy job.
