I'm replacing a window that needs to be very soundproof due to lots of road noise. Do laminated glass windows look bad in person? It's hard to tell from looking at pics online. I want a very soundproof window but not if it looks like shite.

What do yall think?

If I am not mistaken, isn't the "lamination" in between two pieces of glass?

You will not notice a difference at all.

I put sound control glass in two windows in my house. They work well but depending on your wall construction, that sound will travel right through your walls as much or more than your window.

You won't notice the difference in appearance or sound deadening?

Appearance will be the same. Sound deadening will be much improved with laminated glass.

Monolithic 1/4" glass has an STC of 31
1/4 laminated glass has an STC of 35

The STC (Sound Transmission Class) scale is logarithmic, so 35 is way better than 31 as far as sound control is concerned. That doesn't even take into account making it into an insulating unit, which essentially acts as a multiplier for the STC rating. You're standard 1" IGU made with monolithic glass has an STC rating of 35. Swap out one of the sides of the IGU with laminated glass, and you get to 39 STC. Doubling up on both sides of the unit with laminating glass get you to 42, which is crazy quiet for a window. You'll usually get more leakage through the wall or window frame than the glass at that level.

STC is the traditional number used, but OITC has become more common, too (Outdoor/Indoor transmission class). It takes into account lower frequencies. For glass, the STC and OITC kind of run parallel for increases/decreases.

Being based in Nashville, I do a lot of recording studios. We're usually shooting for an STC of upper 40s for home studios, and 50+ for professional studios.
