Gas Furnace Pilot Light Control

My pilot light on our gas furnace has gone out. Everything that I have read says to rotate the control to off, then rotate to pilot, press down and light the pilot. I cannot rotate the control counterclockwise or clockwise. I've tried pushing down in different ways etc. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had to light mine a few months ago after they replaced my neighborhoods gas lines and didn’t re-light the pilot on the furnace.
Anyways I think there was a little safety clip/button that you had to push in order to twist the knob to pilot. Designed to lock it in the off position. Hope this helps
Also, mine had very detailed instructions with pictures/diagrams on the furnace unit itself

Really helps to supply model numbers or at least a picture.
