Bought a house last year with a gas fireplace. Never could get it lit. Gas is on, get the pilot lit but the main gas never turns on after lighting the pilot. I’ve changed the thermocouple/thermopile and still the same thing. Check the switch it’s good. Cleaned out the line. Still no fire. I’m starting to think it’s the valve. Anybody have experience with this? Am I better off buying a new one?

Buy a new one. Those valves can be a pain to diagnose, I've got a few in pieces in a box I've tried to fix over the years and it's always some small part you can't buy.

That's part of the problem, finding exactly the right valve is not easy and often pretty expensive. I have two Mertik Maxitrol units in a box, both G6R series but not much is interchangeable between them so I basically can't make either one work with parts from the other.

You'll probably get more use out of a brand new fireplace. Is it one of those gas fireplaces covered by glass or it is a vented/ventless gas log setup?

This was my problem. Kind of like forgetting to check if something is plugged into an outlet.

The repair tech also showed me where the reset button. It was at the top left toward the front.
