A few weeks back my fridge water filter started making a jackhammer noise when you’d use it. It’s definitely coming from the filter head. Everything I understand it’s from the little built in valve in the filter head.

I can’t quite figure out what triggers it as it’s not consistent. It nearly always does it, but sometimes it will flow a few seconds before starting. So you can start/stop the flow to keep it from jackhammering. However, once it starts, it will do it every time you press it.

I’ve replaced the filter with a genuine Whirlpool filter. It seemed like it stopped it for a week or two, but it’s back.

Anybody experienced anything like this and have a solution? It’s very loud and incredibly annoying. It also reduces the flow so it exacerbates the jackhammer.

Whirlpool French Door fridge with the UKF8001 filter.

Water hammer is typically a one-time event driven phenomenon, right? Like rapidly closing a valve will cause the hammer, then once the “wave” stops it goes away.

This isn’t a one-time sound. It’s continuous as you hold the button down. Like the valve inside the head is rapidly open/close.

So it’s related to water hammer, but I’m not sure how the arrestor will stop this open/close.

Not sure if it’s related, but I did use a nearby spigot with a water hose timer that created water hammer. Anytime that valve would close it would hammer the line. It was a common complaint for it. It’s no longer installed, but any chance it created some issues? Not sure any long standing issues would be created except line damage/separation (all PEX).
