My garage is detached and made entirely of cinder blocks, aside from the roof (standard shingles). The floor within the structure is poured concrete, and flooding hasn’t been an issue.

I want to portion off some of it to make it climate controlled for storage purposes. I’m located in Baton Rouge, so moisture is obviously a concern. I’ve seen a lot online about cinder block sealants, plastic moisture barriers, moisture barrier panels, and many more… but there doesn’t seem to be a consensus.

Does anybody have a use case of doing this? Or some best practice ideas when dealing with making cinder block structures habitable.

We moved in last year, so I’m not entirely sure on its history, but I believe the structure is between 30-40 years old.

Thanks for any advice!

A good elastomeric paint will keep moisture out if applied properly. It won’t help for insulation as a block wall has very minimal insulation value. There are plenty of options though. I’m a commercial masonry contractor so if you need more info just let me know.

If you want an elastomeric coating, we carry BASF and Dow Corning products.

Once that coating is on (I assume I would paint the inside?), could I frame it out and use standard fiberglass insulation? Thanks for your input! Really appreciate the insight.

Get Red Guard, mostly used to waterproof showers but the barrier it puts on is unbelievable.
