Hello Home/Garden Board.

I have had my pressure treated pine fence for just under a year now and I am looking to stain it. I have probably waited longer than I should have but I wanted to wait until I got a airless sprayer to apply the stain.

I have been on YouTube looking at tutorial videos for this and a couple mention pressure washing to clean the fence before applying stain. Have any of you done this?

Also wait stain do you prefer? Water based or oil based?

Kind of depends on how dirty/mildewed the fence got over that year. It WILL have dirt on it since those boards are mostly on the rough side and not real smooth to begin with.

Personally, I would wash it first, let it dry thoroughly and then stain with a water based product. That way it won't hurt your, or your neighbors grass/shrubs near the fence like oil based products could because there will be overspray. Plus, it may penetrate just a tad better being water based.

All painting/staining comes down to prep.

If you don't pressure wash, give it a good Jomax treatment and hose off with nozzle.

Plus in a year when you decide it needs PW you won't be washing off your stain.

Would you wash it by just running the cleaner through the pressure washer?

Jomax is my go-to cleaner before prepping and painting almost anything exterior.

Just mix according to directions in one of those pump up garden sprayers and apply to the fence. Then come back with a garden hose and rinse it off. If using a pressure washer, stand far enough back to not tear up the wood on the fence.

Also since it isn't that old, you may not need to use a pressure washer. Using one on untreated wood (not painted or stained) can damage it slightly if you get too close. I would spray Jomax on it, maybe hit it with a stiff brush, and get a spray nozzle for your hose and rinse it off with that. Let it dry out for a day or so and then stain it. We had a new deck built last fall, and they did come back after a few weeks (to let the wood shrink some first) and they lightly pressure washed it all before staining.
