Do you have to ground a generator?

A family member gave me their old generator. Keep in mind this is my first generator, I went online and found the owners manual and it says you have to ground it. Is this really necessary?
I’ve never done any of this before. I’m trying to get this generator working before any storms hit.
I changed oil and spark plug and air filter. This is the only part I’m not sure about.

I would do what the owner’s manual suggests. Not knowing what size generator we talking or the set up. I have a honda and no ground required.

Not really necessary but can't hurt if you are going to set it up with a transfer switch and backfeed your house.
I guess there is some slim chance a short on the generator could ground to the chassis and present a shock hazard but that is pretty rare.
For the record, I've never grounded a portable generator of any kind.
I believe this is one of these things that is never really done in practice.
Now, if I was using it in a classified environment to power a pump that was moving a flammable liquid in a desert climate? Then yes, I would ground it.

It needs to be grounded. Every source needs to be grounded. There may be multiple ways to do it but it has to be done.
