DIY Difficulty — replacing wooden staircase balusters with metal

Has anyone on here done this themselves? We got some quotes and the prices were outrageous: between $5k and $7k depending on the type/thickness of the metal and designs.
What’s the level of difficulty? We are fairly handy but the high prices seem like it takes an expert to complete this.

metal cant be nailed, screwed, and glued as wood can
best bet is buy a wrought iron railing and cap it in wood if thats the look you are going for, thats perfectly doable yourself.
or pay a pro because its a lot more then just take out the wood and stick some tubes in their place

I've done this when I worked as a trim carpenter, and it's not something a casual DIY person should tackle without some serious thought. Metal balusters, at least the common square ones with caps are the easiest. They simply need good layout, drilling with a forstner bit and a dab of construction adhesive to set in place, used a chop saw or angle grinder to cut to length.

Same here. Been thinking about this for a long time and keep coming back this conclusion. Which sucks.

Watch this video. Not hard, just have to be meticulous.

Yeah it’s expensive AF. I would never mess with it DIY. I’m going to have it done professionally, eventually. Its a kick in the balls price wise.
