Currently, where is a good place in Baton Rouge to get bulk soil mix for a set of raised garden beds? I've been looking at 1/3 each compost, peat moss, and vermiculite (Mel's Mix) but if anyone has a better mix for the Baton Rouge area I'm all ears because I'm new to this whole raised bed thing.

Cleggs on Siegen Lane suggest this mixture for raised bed vegetable gardens and of course sells all the products. I’m sure their other locations have all this as well.

But you can buy “garden soil” (composted forestry products with sand added for weight/drainage) at most larger retail garden centers in town (LA Nursery, Plant Tech, etc) and add the additional bagged amendments as per the Cleggs recipe or whatever you prefer.

You can call Cleggs and ask how their bulk raised bed garden blend differs from their regular bulk garden “soil” - I asked once and honestly I’ve forgotten, but there was little difference - maybe just the addition of sand to the raised bed blend, the price is about the same for both and as I recall about $20 per 1/2 yd. Anyway, their staff is always helpful in answering questions.

I made a bin full today...1/3 shredded bark, 1/3 compost with sand, 1/3 peat moss. Added osmocote, epsom salt and blood meal. I also mixed in a bunch of old potting soil that was in spare pots

came out nice and fluffy

I’ve been gradually top dressing an older bed next to my carport and driveway that’s mostly gravel and red clay. The results have been great so far as the shrubs have finally gotten going as the organics have done their thing and the soil holds some moisture now
