Corn having yellowing leaves

Is it a water issue. I thought they were over watered but held off and no improvement. Is there a magic nutrient that corn needs?

Probably watering, I would say too much still considering the time of year. Most things planted in the ground don't need much watering until it's REALLY dry or if you just transplanted them. My grandfather had corn every year and never watered any of it.
ETA: he did fertilize every year though.

could be a lack of nitrogen in the soil, but considering the time of year I would expect cool wet soil as this explains.
quote:
Corn is a grass and grass thrives on nitrogen. The plant moves nitrogen up the stalk so a nitrogen deficiency manifests itself as corn leaves turning yellow at the base of the plant. A soil test can help you determine if your plants are low in nitrogen. The solution is to side dress with a high nitrogen fertilizer. Cool weather can also make corn plant leaves turn yellow. Again, this is due to a lack of nitrogen. When soil is cool and wet, the corn has trouble absorbing nitrogen from the soil.
So this doesn’t mean there is no nitrogen in the soil, simply that the poor plants are too chilled to efficiently take up enough. The good news is that if cool weather is the culprit the plants will grow out of this yellowing as the weather warms up. Insufficient water will also result in yellow leaves

We never really watered corn that we planted early unless it just turned off really dry. We watered corn that we planted later in the season, especially if both really hot and dry.

Yeah, I can't really see needing to water (in the southeast anyway) until you get into maybe Late July/August. Second harvest. Unless its an unusually dry season.
Definitely not in April
