Looking to re do my 800 sq ft deck with composite deck boards. Who has the best pricing on this stuff? I looked at some PVC boards and they were $75 each! So, composite it is I'm thinking. Deck is high off the ground and I'm thinking composite will last. Is there an online source who delivers a decent product to the house?

I'm looking to go with grooved 16ft boards. What brand did you use and are you happy? Anyone have any tips? Thanks in advance for any help

Is it covered, and if not, are there any large Pines or other trees nearby that will drop needles and leaves on it? I did something similar about a dozen years ago. Thinking it would be less maintenance. Mostly from the pine needles, but they would dump on it during rain storms, and it would leave a mess. I still had to power wash at least once a year, something I was trying to get away from with the old wood boards.

Are you building all new or just putting new boards down? What about railings? I was very pleased with the wood railing kits from Lowe's. I think they were 6 foot sections, with wood top/bottom and wood balusters. We found a stain that was almost a perfect match for the Trex boards we used.

We recently had the old one demo'd and had a new covered deck built and screened in. I was going to try and reuse the composite boards, since I had enough board feet to do the screened in part, but couldn't get those old square head screws out. Ended up going with wood and had the whole thing stained.

I went to the Home Depot website and you are able to put your sq footage and price out different brands. Good place to start

It'll greatly depend on the quality even within a brand as there's varying grades.

Also check out the span requirements for joist. Is the decking designed to be used on 16" or 12" centers.

It's an open deck with no pines around. I do plan on covering part of it one day. I was looking into Trex. I'll probably just buy it locally at the Depot or Lowe's I'm thinking after reading

I plan on adding joists to what I have. Not doing a complete rebuild.

Have you looked into pricing Ipe hardwood? LSt time I checked the price was similar to composites with a 50-75 year lifespan on the wood

This is what it would looke like with a yearly oiling

This is what it looks like with no maintance

I'd at least call for a quote (including delivery and total package) at a local building supply; however it's your money and maybe (jus maybe)the big-box will have a color and style you want or can live with. One word of warning: the order time for some may surprise you if it's not in stock. Because they may only make that particular style/color infrequently... so plan way ahead of time. It took nearly 3months to get the last we used.

(*edit to add: because there's always something else - when you hurry)

That is what we did. Old frame was in good shape so we added some and predrilled the boards and used those composite deck screws. I thing some of the newer stuff has hidden screw points.

You’ll be pleased with Trex. And they sell it in 12 and 16 foot boards. Maybe 8 as well but we did 12 foot. My old deck was 32x8 and we staggered the boards. Two 12 ft boards and one cut down to 8. Came back on the next row with 4 ft left from cutting the 12 down to 8, two 12s and another 4 ft. Just trying to avoid all the ends being together.

My only real complaint was having to pressure wash after pine needles would collect. It held up well and looked great after washing it. I have a tiny little electric pressure washer and used the fanned out tip and it had maybe 1700PSI, and even then I dialed it back some. It does feel hotter in the summertime than wood if you do go out there barefoot. But ours got direct sun all day.
