My house is a 100 yr old craftsman bungalow. I just painted it two years ago but I live on a busy city street and it gathers dust/grit. I’m scared to pressure wash it (part of the reason I had to repaint) and will be using a wide brush and a hose. It’s not very big so I’m not worried about manually cleaning it. What’s a good cleaner that will remove the grit and mildew without damaging the paint or changing the color?

I will second Jomax. I've cleaned many houses over the years in preparation to prepping to paint to get a lot of the dirt and mildew/mold off the exterior and that, along with some household bleach are my go to cleaners.

I put a mix of Jomax, bleach and water in a pump up sprayer and spray a section, let it sit for a while and hose off with one of those little straight stream nozzles you can find at any big box store.

I've also use my pressure washer but if you want to avoid that, the above nozzle will work fine. If the dirt is stubborn, by all means use your brush to clean the surface.

I live down the block from a ball park and 1 1/2 blocks from the interstate so I know all about dirt being kicked up and finding its way to the house.

I’m a bit nervous about using bleach. I don’t want discoloring. I saw what it did when the painter prepped. I’ve read that you’re supposed to use oxygen bleach rather than chlorine bleach on exterior paint. I see where Jonax recommends using regular Clorox.

If worried, just do a small spot on the house to test to see how it turns out before going whole hog on the project.

ETA: You mentioned you'd use a brush and clean it like that since the house is not all that large. If you stick with that, just use hot water in a 5 gallon bucket and some type detergent and have at it.

I haven’t used it yet but my cousins were raving about 30 Seconds (looks like they sell it by the gallon at Lowe’s) when we got together for Easter. And these are guys that hand wash their vehicles weekly. They keep their stuff spotless so if they’re recommending something, it’s legit.

I ended up creating a 1 cup oxiclean (oxygen bleach), 1/4 cup dawn, and a 5 gallon bucket of water with a telescopic brush that worked well.
