I’m planning to pour a chain wall that will be tied into a new walkway (same pour) on the back side of my little shop. The c/w will extend about 50’ and go from about 18-20” high and taper off to be just a couple of inches high where it ends. I will be setting sch 40 posts inside the stem wall as well for a new fence, eventually.

The area is already excavated a few inches, but I presume it would be good practice to have a footing dug the length of the wall for strength and stability. I’m guessing 12” below grade would be more than enough, but figured I’d bounce it off the board to make sure I’m not going complete overkill.

Will this be a retaining wall (dirt fill on one side, open on the other)? You'll need some kind of footing regardless. If it's a retaining wall, you'll want to have a longer leg on the dirt side

Not a retaining wall. Will be flatwork tied into the wall on one side and existing grade on the other side.
