I must have cut 1000 of these this year already. This afternoon I found a group of particularly evil vines but with beautiful tricolor thorns...just got me wondering if anyone has ever grown these ON PURPOSE??

I've heard the root is edible fwiw but can't imagine ever being desperate enough to try

the thick shoots that come up from time to time, look and are said to taste like asparagus.

I have the bad gardening habit of thinking all vines either look great or might grow into something great looking. Smilax has nice evergreen leaves and berries. When you don't want it, you need to dig out the bulb or rhizome. For a newly sprouted thin vine it may be as small as 1/2" diameter. For a 1/2 thick vine there may be a cluster of fist-size and bigger tubers. Cut vine and stump killer painted on a fresh stump works on small plants, but not the larger.
