I’m mostly in the same boat as you, just have a few months head start in grass ID.
My main concern with herbicide right now is just killing everything off (because it’s mostly weeds) which invites more weeds. So I am leaning toward not gassing now, waiting until the spring to gas then thatch and aerate and get on a good mowing schedule. This would at least give the various grass species a chance to get out in front. Also trying to time pre emergent to aid in the effort.
I will say that my yard started looking much better when I got rid of the lawn service and mowed myself more frequently mid summer. Tinkering with it using herbicide was a learning experience, but may have set me back, I had more weed/grass than I thought and the weeds beat the grass after killing the weeds.
So all that said, mowing and aerating for a season may promote a grass in your yard naturally (without too many chemicals), which you could further promote the following season

It’s zoysia and St Aug. start by putting down a pre em. This winter I’d hit anything green with trimec. Grassy weeds with atrazine.

Do a pre emergent like barricade now or in Jan/feb? So nothing should be left green except broadleaf and grassy weeds?
Do I fertilize in spring too?

Thanks man this is helpful. What are you using aerate? My lawn is not very big.

I have just a single core hand aerator, but plan on getting a rig or hiring someone next year to at least do my front yard the front portion of my yard inside circle drive really needs it. That area has st aug originally, but got hit with a bunch of centipedes seed I assume came from the neighors yard from a washout in April (he hydroseeded for a house flip), and has a very small patch of golf course Bermuda that found its way there. At this point I’m just trying to get one to win and promote that one. If I didn’t have trees in that area I would let the Bermuda run wild. Other yard area I’m siding, plugging and sprigging zoysia, but there is a lot of new centipede there as well. I did the empire zoysia and centipede actually work somewhat well together, especially in establishment phase. They grow about same rate and look actually look similar from a distance, similar fert needs too. Centipede does go from liking great to shite in a few days too, so ultimately pulling for zoysia
But with aeration, same concern with inviting weeds, so has to be timed sort of in between pre emergent, and while the grass really wakes up in the spring.
Site One said to throw some pre em down now, not too late.. You can probably get that one down, with another in feb/march and get yourself in a better position for next year.

I don't ever remember having weeds and lawn issues like the last few years....what is it; weather, evasive species, etc?
I have spent thousands and still in the same spot.

Sweet. Is barricade the play?

I used a prodiamine product, I think Lesco 004 which I think is basically barricade. Just used this because over read prodiamine was a good for inexperienced, it was also economical in granular form and I was a little late to get it down. If you could do it in the next few days I would think that would be the last window before it gets much colder and we have rain to water it in
