I just finished watching this on Nova.
Cathedrals 800 plus years old and still standing.
Craftsmanship never to be duplicated nor desired in this modern world.
Architecture never to be imagined ever again.
Between the conditions and tools that were available, it is truly the finest period of structure design and pride in their professions.

Pillars of the Earth is a good book that is centered around the building of a cathedral. If you found the topic interesting it may be worth a read.

Possibly my favorite book ever.

I'll have to check that out. My wife and I went to Italy for our honeymoon last year and visited dozens of basilicas and cathedrals, not to mention buildings like the pantheon that are much older. The craftsmanship and engineering was incredible, with fitments and angles cut perfectly.
The doors on the pantheon are a marvel in and of themselves.
