Personally, out of those 2 choices, I'd go with the one you can see through as it adds another visual dimension to the table.

We’re having one built right now. I liked the smoke because it’s translucent and you can see the edge better but didn’t like being able to see all the way through. So we ordered a thin layer of black then the smoke above it. It’ll be a few weeks before it’s done though so no pics but they did a small sample and it looked good.

What wood did you decide on? Clear is harder to do because if you have any bubbles you will see it.

Something from costa rica. I can’t remember exactly but we went to the place and looked at about 500 before picking our slab. I’ll see if I can find out but they all blurred together honestly.

Yeah it is. To be clear, ours won’t be clear but have some tint to it. They use a giant vacuum chamber to get the air out.

Here’s an update to the table. Made a mistake during the second pour. I don’t know if the table shifted but the epoxy on the mold on one end wasn’t at the top of the live edge like the other end so I had to mix a little more epoxy and add to the pour. Problem is that added epoxy hasn’t set. Called the manufacturer and they said to give it a few more days. If it doesn’t set then scrape it off and just have it sanded down to the hardened epoxy. It’s not a big deal. Lose maybe a 1/4” off the table. I must not have mixed well enough. Here’s some pics. I decided on a smoke color so you can still see some of the live edge

Are to taking it to a place with a wide belt sander? If so where?

Yes. There’s a place in Robert on 190. Guys name is Steve Rorax. He has a 52” sander and a smaller planer. He does some beautiful work especially with sinker cypress

That looks amazing. Could you post some higher resolution pics when you have a chance?

Update on the table. I know it’s been a minute. Did the epoxy pour in two pours due to the heat. Well the second pour was a screw up. My ratio had to be off and it never hardened completely. So I had to take it off and pour again. Lots of cursing ensued but I wasn’t giving up.
First pic is trying to get the epoxy off with a heated putty knife. That process was too slow
Finally got smart and used a router with a flattening bit and that worked great. Just super messy. Epoxy shavings went everywhere.
Second pour went great and it finally hardened.
Just got it back from getting sanded on the belt sander. Very happy with it. Now the fun part of lots of sanding.
