Best way to rust proof metal fire pit

Other than just frequently spraying it down with rustoleum? Especially during the warm weather seasons when not being used. Could it actually be coated in oil of some type to stop from rusting?

Burn vegetable oil or lard onto it. Fat will polymerize into a coating that will outlast any paint you could use.

Ha I just keep spraying mine down when needed. I let it get it a little too far, then I spray like new before having folks over.
