Attic ladder difficult to close

Recently, whenever I try to close my attic ladder, the main door frame starts to close and I’m unable to fit the folded stairs into the attic. It doesn’t clear the frame, and the only way to shut it is for my wife to hold the door frame down while I fold the ladder in. House is only 6 years old, and there was never an issue before. Sounds like a spring problem, but we never touched the springs and they look good on inspection. Any tips?

Mine does the same thing and is a little bouncy when it's down. I need to adjust my springs to the lower setting. Not sure what could cause an acute problem like that though. Cold weather?

It started about 2 months ago while it was blistering hot.

Both of mine (inside and outside) do this also. I always did the same as you until I had my A/C worked on. The tech folded the ladder at the first joint lifted them and held them up with one hand on the second step while pulling the door down with the other. It is a little awkward and they are somewhat heavy as they are both on 11ft ceilings, but I began doing it that way and works like a charm now.

This is how I've always had to close mine in the garage, one hand on the pull string and the other on the ladder.
