How long will growth be stunted? How long until I should fertilize again?

Ours was about that size when Andrew came through, it’s huge now 20” diameter, about 40’ tall beautiful shape, reminds me of a giant acorn. Give it plenty of water in early years

guy at the tree nursery advised me to trim off the top 3 feet of each tree in order to make them grow more canopy-like

How much of the rootball did you dig? What size?

After transplanting like that, it goes through a phase:

First year-Sleep
Second year-Creep
Third year-Leap

I would use slow release fertilizer next year.

Sounds like you got a decent root ball dug. Just keep them watered and mulched and exercise a little patience.

The tops will probably straighten out as well. If not you can prune with a tall ladder down the road.

Water as needed.

Twice a week if really dry, less if you get a good rain.

Yes one year.

And let it have some movement while staked.

Are drake elms the ones that drop the little helicopter seed pods? I think that’s what my neighbor has planted over my driveway and that thing is crapping something all over my cars year around. It’s lopsided now from me pruning as high as I could reach with a pole saw standing on a 20’ ladder.
