AC Thermostat reading wrong Temp

Woke up this morning the AC is on it’s blowing cold air which is great. It is set to Cold Auto and 78 degrees. The thermostat reading said 95 which is not great. It is no where near that hot.
The previous home owner did a small remodel and the thermostat is near the door leading to the garage and about three feet above the return air.
Is this thermostat broken, should it be moved or both? Thanks for any insight.

Is the thermostat on an exterior wall? that could give inaccurate readings. I had a similar issue at a previous house and bought an ecobee b/c it has remote sensors. So my thermostat always had the wrong temp, but I could tell Ecobee to only use the remote sensor. I believe more thermostats have these now. I only mention Ecobee bc it was the only solution available at that time for me.

Try replacing the Batteries. Hopefully they didn’t explode then you would need to replace the thermostat.

No batteries. It’s hardwired. Power supply isn’t the issue. The rest of the house rest is cool, 75 degrees, only thing acting up is the thermostat.

If it’s digital replace the batteries. Weak batteries can make a digital thermostat do some weird things when the batteries are low

Get a thermometer and make sure the temperture is actually 95 there.
Another poster asked if it is on a hot wall. One way to find out is to unscrew it from the wall and see what it reads.
Change it if need be.

if the wall its on feels warm to the touch you need to move it to a new location or seal the heat penetration through the wall
if the wall its on doesnt feel warm to the touch, then you need a new thermostat
