upvotes and downvotes provide nothing to this site. absolutely nothing.
they don't really provide anything to any site that uses them come to think of it.
the only real effect downvotes have for reddit is that if you get enough of them on a particular subreddit board, you're only allowed to make one post every 10 minutes since it's based on post history. it's like saying, "you have a history of shite posting. we're going to put you in timeout for 10 minutes." once you actually build a positive post history up, that timeout period can be removed. but that idea is too progressive for this site.
now, if we as users knew who were upvoting/downvoting us, that'd be pretty cool.
