Have you ever considered an IRC chat applet within the site?

I ask because of examples such as today's thread on the House IRS hearing. Almost all of the posts within are of the spur of the moment basis... forgettable and discardable. A live chat (which is relatively easy to implement, by the way) might work pretty well for live commentary on such events.
Also, while I'm at it... how about an enhancement to the search function that allows a user to find all posts from user XXX in reply to poster YYY?

More work to implement, support, and moderate, and it would cut down on pageviews and ad impressions. I'm not seeing a plus side here.
