Little background to start off. I’ll surpass mid-forties at the end of the month.
As a kid I did kids stuff, sports, bike a lot and enjoyed running. Move into my teen years, full of piss and vinegar and smarter than everyone. I began smoking. I was so cool. In high school I took fitness (class) which would be equivalent to weight room.
I started of benching 115 as a freshman and by the end of the year I could push 225. Not too shabby. But then it went down hill. I began driving and exercise took a backseat. Women were much more important.
About 9 years ago a finally quit smoking and ran a couple 5k’s to to ensure I could. Just prior to the outbreak, the first day of daylight savings I had a plan to at least walk everyday. I have kept that plan but have tried to do a little more incrementally. Remember I’m old and the joints and muscles are not as flexible as they once were.
I have walked/ran daily unless I’m sore in which I will do a HIIT or yoga. Lately I have been incorporating some dumbbells into the mix. Again, not to push too hard too fast, I do 5 sets of curls and then 4 sets of butterfly’s. Odd days I do shoulder shrugs, what I call three wheeler pulls off the flat bench and dumbbell pull-ups.
I workout at least 30 minutes a day but it can run into an hour plus as running and weight are always performed. That being said and the reason for your opinions is will this help slim me down a bit. I eat and apple and banana each day, protein is peanut butter or multinut butter sandwich with honey and dinner is sweet potato and another veggie. Not worried about meat at the moment but have cut it out for the past 3 weeks. Currently 5’10” 174lbs. I’d like to be 168-170 with a little less belly and more muscle. Based on this info should I end up shaping up by Christmas?

A lot of carbs and no meat. Don't see you getting enough protein with what you are listing there. There are a lot of wasted carbs in the apple and banana. I also don't think you're eating enough calories likely. If anything you'll wreck your metabolism and remain skinny fat.

Not getting nearly enough protein.
Also focus on resistance training more than just “cardio” and “walking”. You might be a good candidate for something like P90X.
Also if you say you want to lose a little belly that’s going to be more than 4-6 lbs.
The main thing you need to do is get more active, eat more protein, the rest will come naturally just by that.

I don’t have any love handles. Just a slight bulge in front, not dicky do but not like I was 18 either. I figured the 4-6 because the denser muscle will compensate for the fat loss.

174 at 5’10” is not bad at all.
Honestly sounds like you are getting into a pretty good routine all by yourself.
I would increase protein intake and start progressively increasing the weight you are using. I personally like barbell movements like the squat, overhead press, bench, and deadlift. If you want to continue using dumbbells that’s fine, but try to increase the weight over time.
Walking and running are healthy and get you outside so no need to cut that out.

Heavy compound lifts. Build muscle, get stronger, and plus it’s fun to chase new PRs.

I appreciate it. I didn't want to sound like I was overweight, just want to trim a bit of excess, ya know.

Some examples please. Currently I have dumbbells ranging from 10-30 lbs. I'm willing to buy more as needed.

Agree with many replies about the protein intake. Your dinner of sweet potatoes and veggies is great, but that meal is entirely carbs! One rule of mine that is science based and legit is to not eat carbs by themselves. I would try to eat a little protein with EVERY meal.
You are talking about losing 4 lbs by Christmas, should not be a problem. There is no such thing as "spot reducing". If you like your current program, I would simply add a HIIT type activity a few times a week, something like pushing/pulling a sled preferably, muscle toner AND big time calorie burner in a short period of time.

Well your compound lifts are mainly the big three and that’s bench press, squats, and dead lifts. Overhead press is another compound lift as well. Technically you can do all those lifts with dumbbells but having access to barbells and a power rack is better. I would assume you are going to need a lot heavier dumbbells than 30lbs but good luck finding them right now. I would join a gym, just don’t join planet fitness because they are basically anti strength with very few free weights and no power racks .

I’m not saying dumbbells aren’t good now because they are necessary in accessory lifts. Dumbbell floor press, rows, skull crushers for triceps etc. If you can’t join a gym you can still grow and get strong with dumbbells, I would just get a lot more weight.
