Pull ups. As soon as you get really good at them add weights.

I'd say weighted pull ups are harder. I'm more out of breath/get a better pump from doing pull-ups than I ever get from a machine

There's a metal works business nearby, I was going to see if they could build a lat pull-down machine that can hold 1000 pounds. Think that would be worth having?

I would agree they are harder, especially from a Grip perspective.

you would never need more than 300. if its for home use and you can't find a used commercial model with a 300 lbs stack I would buy or make something similar to this legend model LINK

If you ever need more than 300 on a lat pulldown then you can do other things to make it harder or add a adapter pin that allows you to add plates to the outside.
