How to add high volume pushups to workout?

About 10 years ago I got onboard some plan, can’t remember what it was, that recommended an extremely high volume of pushups, hundreds per day where I’d do a set of 20-30 pushups every hour for my entire waking day.
I ended up feeling as strong, if not stronger than I’d ever felt, doing this, but eventually all of the soft tissues and tendons in my elbows and triceps basically exploded and I couldn’t sustain it so I stopped and went back to a more traditional lifting model that I’m on now.
I’d like to figure out a way to add these back into my workout at a slightly reduced rate but still getting some added benefits of the volume. I wouldn’t do it every single day, that wrecked me and wasn’t sustainable, but I’m thinking doing it 2-3 days per week.
I lift MTThF, and I do upper M/Th and lower T/F. I workout first thing in the morning, and I’m wondering whether I add the pushups the same day that I do bench (bench first thing in the morning and then pushups throughout that day) or whether I do them the following day.
So I’m wondering if I should do:
M - Upper (bench) + pushups
T - Lower
W - Off
Th - Upper (bench) + pushups
F - Lower
Sat - Pushups
Sun - Off
Or whether I should do:
M - Upper (bench)
T - Lower + pushups
W - Off
Th - Upper (bench)
F - Lower + pushups
Sat - Off
Sun - Pushups

You’re probably better off doing sub maximal volume over more days. If you want to do 500 a week, do 6 sets of 18 though out the day 5 days of the week

So don’t distinguish between days when I’m doing bench vs days when I’m not? Just do pushups throughout the day on the 5 lifting days?

When I competed in powerlifting, I’d overload myself on chest day. Sometimes I’d pre-exhaust my chest before lifting and do 5 minutes of pushups. Sometimes I’d do that after chest day to build it up as well. Worked great for building up my chest and also my endurance. My bench went up as well, and I only did it twice a week.

Interesting. Feels like more of a bodybuilding technique than a powerlifting one.

I would try sets of 5 to 10 every hour and see how it goes.
(ETA: We did hundreds of pushups every day for many weeks in the military.)

Just yell, "Half right, face!" at yourself when needed.
Personally I'd change what you're doing for bench if it doesn't accomplish what you want. A high volume of pushups shouldn't cause your soft tissues damage even in your 40s unless there's something else wrong (diet, form, etc.)
