I use map my walk on my phone and I have a gear 3 watch. When walking I get a huge difference in mileage and calories, but steps are about the same. For instance, this morning map my walk logged me for 3 miles and about 578 calories burned, but my watch logged me for 2.3 miles and 338 calories burned. Why is there such a huge contrast between the two?

My height and weight measurements are the same on both.

They aren't very accurate.

I saw one of the news stations did a comparison of the many fit trackers and the difference between the 4 she tested ranged from 100-500cals difference between each.

I never thought they could really nail down the calories burned, but I at least thought they could get the mileage right with GPS being on both devices.

You're not going to accurately count calories burned until technology and knowledge improves. Too many variables every time you exercise.

But you can estimate it if you want.

Best thing to do is use a calculator to get your TDEE and macros and then establish diet goals. They factor in activity levels and can give you a good estimate of what you need to eat in order to lose weight. Exercise just helps.

If you're trying to count calories accurately, use what's on the box or find items with a green check mark next to them on MyFitnessPal.

I have calculated that through My Fitness Pal. I just have to maintain discipline to eat right consistently. Hopefully with me walking at least an hour everyday and doing push ups, pull ups, chin ups and resistance band rows, I will get my body to where I want it to be by October

I use the UA band for health tracking, In addition to the UA heat rate for workouts, the band says that the accuracy for resting heart rate is good, but that wrist trackers are not good for workout/heart rate because they don't connect as well on moving or sweaty skin. I find that the heart rate tracker shows a vast difference in the actual reading so I feel like that's a more accurate estimation since it stays in constant contact with your chest the entire time.

for milage they are pretty good, calories...well not so much. but in the end if your are tracking all the other variables closely and walking a similar distance each day you can atleast get an idea over a 2 week period if you need to adjust your diet some.

In the end all of this crap is a huge guessing game as far as calories, bodyfat, calories burned etc. The people who make progress are those that track diet very closely and look at the trends and adjust based on the trend.

Remember the trend is your friend.
