I mostly dead lift with 135#. The most I do is 225# when I'm feeling really good and have been steady lifting for a while. I have the same back pain if I quit doing dead lifts. As long as I do them, no pain.

I'm actually a big fan of getting volume from RDLs, then finishing with full DL singles.
For instance, I might do 3-5 sets of progressively heavy RDLs at 8-12 reps per set. Then work up to a heavy single that fits my current goal on full DL.
I like the full reset and accept nothing less than perfect form - I originally jacked up my psoas really bad from overextended DLs and was well on the path to a hernia.

Slightly off topic, but what do you guys with a bad lower back do for ab workouts? I've neglected my abs since I had surgery for a herniated disk in my lower back, but I think I'm ready to start working them again. I've started with planks and cable holds, but obviously I need to add some variety. I have medicine balls, but unfortunately no ab wheel or stability ball.
Look into reverse hypers. They help to strengthen and decompress the lower back . They are great
