Story on Clinton taking out Norman?
I believe Norman had the Clinton’s vacationing with him in Florida and Bill slipped down some stairs and crashed into Norman’s knee, tearing his ACL. This was I believe after his Masters collapse. Not sure if he ever won another PGA tour event.

But to the OP's point, just popularity wise, it's probably Charlie Woods
He's gonna be the Dale Jr of the PGA Tour. Beloved by the fans, but not as good as his dad.

You make a lot of good points but Phil has won 6 majors fyi

That's going to be Hard Tiger was the only real child prodigy I have ever seen that not only lived up to the hype but fricking blew past it. Maybe Lebron but we didn't start hearing about him until he was in High School.
He was literally on a TV show hitting golf balls at 3 years old. Everyone knew who he was and that he was coming for years and he just kept getting better.
We might have someone who gets really popular and stays at the top for an extended period but to do what Tiger did...I don't think that will ever be see again

I believe the next iconic golfer (20+ career wins, 4+ majors, 50 top tens) is under 5 years old growing up in Asia somewhere. There will never be anyone close to Tiger imho.

That will be John Rahm.

Whoever it is, they're not in the PGA yet, IMO. Look for up-and-coming golfers that grew up after the Tiger boom, born 2001 or later.
I think that's the point that we'll look back and see that better athletes picked up the game from a very early point in their lives.

Morikawa, scottie, ect are all tiger boom generation guys
I don't give a shite about saudi money, the worst thing about LIV is that the tour was about to be absolutely loaded with talent.
It is still stacked but watered down.

That’s my whole problem too. It was 5-6 guys close every week. Made golf fun to watch again. Now it kinda sucks.

Phil is at 5 and I'd say he's definitely an iconic golfe
Phil has 6… 3 masters, 2 PGAs and an Open.

It will be someone that not only has the game but has a big personality that the media can fall in love with.
I don't see that person out on Tour yet. There are a lot of clones out there right now.

David Duval, are you serious? He wasn't that great and a complete dickhead as well. Phil was easily Tiger's biggest competitor during their prime. Tiger got the best of Phil most every time. David Duval, what a joke.

Not sure if serious.

He’s a great golfer but he’ll never appeal to anyone outside of golf fans. Without that element, can you truly be iconic?

I was going by record criteria.
