Poor guy has been injured for 3 years and hasn’t played. AK coming back made me go look up and see how they compare:

It’s almost identical. Do we just expect young guys to be winners right away now so we don’t notice it anymore?

I honestly think part of the AK thing was him being an Asian guy who got none of the stereotypes.

From LA, but went to OU over a Pac 10 school. Wore a massive belt buckle. And seemed like this massive party guy.

Then there was the Ryder Cup match over Sergio. It also felt like he left to party more than because of injuries. He also did win three tourneys super quickly. Not a ton of guys had won in that few of Tour starts, but the lore is definitely crazier than the results.

I think most of the hype was from his year in 2008.

I think you have to look at the entire picture & not just wins and top 10s. I don’t think Burns or Berger ever had a year like AK did in 2008.

AK turned pro in 2006 & had a meteoric rise in popularity, that peaked in 2008.

He finished T2 in his first PGA Tour event in 06.
He won twice in 2008 becoming the first American under 25 to win twice in one year since Tiger in 2000.
He finished in the top 10 at The Open.
He finished the year with two T3 finishes in FedEx Cup events & went up to #6 in OWGR.
Then the victory over Sergio in Ryder Cup was huge too.

In the 2009 Masters, he set the record for most birdies in a round with 11 in the second round on his way to a T20 finish.

In 2010, he won in Houston & then a week later he finished 3rd at the Masters, then he got injured.

He tried to make a comeback & got a Top 5 finish at The Open in 2011, but he had surgery and quit playing within the next year.

Seeing young guys win early has become a little more normal, but it was much more than 2 wins in 08 that helped him gain popularity.
