Lately I've been swinging too flat to combat a reverse pivot

My instructor is trying to get me steep on the backswing

I feel like this throws me out of position and I wipe from the inside with an open face

Why do I have to go steep to shallow... can't I just go shallow to shallow?

I notice I am not swinging nearly as fast as I used to though since I flattened my backswing. I feel like when I'm steep my balance is WAY off.

Try keeping the face of the club facing the ball as long as you can on the backswing

Take a stance and put your butt against a wall. Literally make your arse touch a brick wall or fence you can swing against. Take a slow backswing, if you take one too fast, you will a chunk of the wall out or ruin a golf club. instant feedback and getting your club steeper.
