Play from the correct tee for your skill level. Don’t hit it in the rough (it’s brutal. If you grab a clump of it, you literally can’t pull it out of the ground)
Keep the ball below the hole. Downhill putts are really fast
The practice facility sucks (unless it’s changed since I played in 2007)
Prepare to be wowed by the setting
Prepare to be underwhelmed greatly by the actual golf course. It’s got like 3 notable holes. The rest is a slog. If it wasn’t on the coast, you’d have never heard of it.

Well, that's a truly ignorant thing to say

Prepare for a 5+ hour round; relax and enjoy the view. Also, on holes 9-10, there's a slight slope on the fairway towards the coast that's not easily perceptible, so the ball is a little below your feet (for right handed golfers).

Why is this ignorant? Have you played it? I have, along with ~175 other courses all over the US, including 9 in the top 100 “you can play”

The actual golf holes of Torrey Pines South are not very good. It’s one long, straight, narrow, flat Par 4 after another. The first Par 3 is a great hole, but that’s as good as it gets. The rest of the holes are boring and monotonous. Those are just the facts.

If the course wasn’t on bluffs overlooking the Ocean, it wouldn’t be a course that you’d travel to go play. It wouldn’t be on any list. It wouldn’t be good enough to host the PGA Tour and it certainly wouldn’t have hosted a US Open. So, like I said, you probably wouldn’t have heard of it.

That is the definition of an opinion.

Because if it wasn't on the coast it wouldn't be Torrey Pines. If you moved Augusta to Minnesota I bet they wouldn't have the masters there.

Coolest story I've heard all week.

Fine... It’s my opinion, having played Torrey Pines South, that while it’s set in a spectacular place, that the golf course itself is not particularly special. The majority of the holes, in my opinion, lack character and variety, and aren’t particularly memorable. Having played serveral other courses of note, and in a similar price range, I did not feel that Torrey Pines offered a value on par with those other courses. I enjoyed my day there, as the scenery and weather were perfect, and I’m glad I got to play it.

The OP asked for opinions and what to expect. I shared mine.

Ignorant would be not actually having played a golf course and then telling someone who has that they are ignorant for having theirs.

Now this is ignorant... Augusta GA isn’t exactly a “destination”. It’s a shite hole. Augusta National is special because of its founder, it’s history, and most importantly because it’s one of the most spectacular collection of golf holes on the planet, despite the fact that it’s not in a particularly notable topographical place.
