My oldest son will be 17 next month and has outgrown his big junior set of Callaways. He plays a good bit, and we want to get him a good full iron set for his birthday. He is a lefty. Can be new (within reason price wise) or used (if in good or better shape) As of right now, he is just under 5-8, 135lbs, but is still growing and has been rapidly for the last year. I'm not sure what his swing speed is to know whether to get Stiff or Reg flex/graphite or steel shafts. Of course, he likes the Paradyms, PXGs, Pings, etc. Just not 100% sure the best direction to go on this. Any help from the TD golf experts is appreciated.

Also, Callaway Pre-Owned is having a decent sale right now for anyone looking.

Does he have a golf handicap, if not, what does he normally score for an eighteen hole round? Does he play competitive golf?

During the summer he played a few beltway series events here in Fort Bend County with some friends, but that's about it. He plays baseball in high school and summer travel ball, so no golf team for him. He def enjoys playing with his buddies though. According to him, he normally shoots around 85-90.

My son is a Senior this year and played baseball since he was 8, was on the Varsity team but the team has went through 4 coaches in 4 years and he got tired of all the drama and quit after his Sophomore year. He played golf and baseball at the same time which was rough but he ended up just playing golf. Since your son plays baseball, I'm going to ASSUME he has a decent swing and a pretty fast swing speed. Here is my suggestion, go to a local golf shop, they more than likely have an area with a launch monitor. Since he isn't playing competitive golf regularly and just likes to play with his buddies there is no need to spend the money on a fitting. Find out what his swing speed and lie angle are and go from there. I would take the 85-90 with a grain of salt and say he probably shoots closer to 100 which is not bad, it's what average golfers normally score. Not everyone knows all the rules and take drops and mulligans without actually counting them as penalty strokes.

I'd get him a set of player improvement irons There are still new sets from models a few years old like the Taylormade 790's, Mizuno JPX 923, Srixon ZX5 or the T350 that are at a reduced price or there are used sets of these as well. The launch monitor will let you see if he needs R, S or X flex shafts. Use the chart below. I would also look at a new driver if he's using the Junior set too, it's probably too small and the shaft is not what he needs. There are new old stock options at a discount there as well along with used. Good luck

Thank you for that advice. Very solid. He already has new, full size Sim2 driver, paradym 3 wood, TM M2 hybrid, so it is just the irons needing to be replaced now. And no, I did not buy him the new clubs mentioned above. His grandmother bought those for him.
